January is the usual month to look to the past year (it is a good month to look to the coming one, but we already often do prospective in this newsletter). Thus we will go quickly through some interesting changes in the working condition we have seen in Asia/India in 2011. Some pictures illustrate these simple facts. As usual, we have tried to take neither the best or the worst of pictures we have.
Sanitary situation in factories of the area are improving, even if disparities remains huge and some still very poor situation is found, especially in India.
Chemicals management remains a major issue. The low awareness of both workers and management leads to slow improvement only.
Crowded production workshop is also a frequent problem (especially in the Indian sub-continent). However, on such topic, it is so related to specific factories that no trends can be found.
Faking some documents is becoming a frequent finding, not only in China as we were used to, but on most countries of the area.
Despite important automatization currently involved in China, many tasks remains manual. These jobs are especially at risk in this time of wages pressures on factories and working time reduction. Thus a special follow-up is needed for such factories.
To conclude, working conditions have improved this year, but some issues remain endemic (as safety and working time). Some factories are leading the way, while on the opposite some are still far behind. They need both incentives and helps to achieve proper improvements.
